Amazon Prime Video is introducing a new suspenseful adventurous drama web television series created
by Gillian Flynn, ‘Utopia’. The series is based on the 2013 British television drama series Utopia, written
by Dennis Kelly that aired from January 2013 to August 2014.
a comic nerd group
Utopia walks us through with a comic nerd group who believe in a modern comic by the same name Utopia to be real. They think that all that is happening in the comic book will happen in the real world around them. This
fact creates a division among the group members and as a result, separates them.
Later, they unite when the boogeyman from the comic gets set to kill everyone who’s read the pages of
the comic book Utopia. This storyline has been taken from the British version where ‘The Network’ kills anyone who
comes in their way of capturing the manuscript and also to kill Jessica Hyde.
Hyde (played by Sasha Lane) is a long-term enemy of the Network and has been running away from
them for many years. She and Dr. Kevin Christie (played by John Cusack) joins the group and help them
with better chances to fight against the boogeymen.
The well-known actor Rainn Wilson who has entertained us with his comic role of Dwight Schrute in the
American sitcom ‘The Office’, is playing the role of the biologist Michael Stearn.
A global pandemic highlighted
The show highlights a global pandemic originating from the United States and spreading out to the
whole world. Amidst the pandemic, the crew believes in the facts that are written in the comic book
Utopia. The book as well shows how the world gets duped by man-made diseases and even mentions
viruses that are yet to come in the future.
All these factors of man-made diseases and bio-welfare from the series will seem like a very relatable
topic among the viewers because of the Coronavirus pandemic in the world. It would make them think a
lot about the current situation of the virus.
The series is said to have a very creepy and full of twists’ plot. From the pages of the comic book to
every detail in the series, Utopia is a very creepy and disturbing story. The series is not meant for a
sensitive audience. It contains twists to an extent that is unguessable for the viewers.
comparatively better than original?
If compared with the British version of Utopia, the American version can be termed as a less creepy and
weird series. However, with all the creepy acts and scenes of Jessica Hyde, this series reflects drama a
little more than it should.
On April 19th, 2018 Utopia was announced to be set up by HBO and directed by David Fincher with a
total of nine episodes. Due to some financial crisis, HBO dropped the project and it was later taken up by
Amazon with Gillian Flynn to direct. The filming was completed in October 2019 with only 8 episodes to
air in the first season. It will be airing its first season on the 25th of September 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
