Ever since the 1990s, the books we read, the animated movies we saw, the shows we saw have been a great influence on many youngsters who are in the 20s or 30s now. ‘The Lion King’ is one such Disney media franchise that started in 1994 with the film ‘The Lion King’ directed by Rob Minkoff.
THE LION KING FRANCHISE
Many spinoffs, video games, and television shows have been made in different languages based on the Lion King. Disney released a second part of the 1994 film with the same cast in 1998 ‘The Lion King II: Simba’s pride’. The story of the sequel was not recognized much in the spinoffs. The first movie has been the main basis for the spinoffs. It was also known that the second part was inspired by Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
There was a final and a third installment of the Lion King franchise that was more focused on the side characters of the first part of Lion King. It was not a sequel but a part of the franchise.
After 16 years of Lion King, Jon Favreau directed ‘The Lion King’ with new and improved animations under the Walt Disney Company. It was released in over 30 languages and was referred to as the best-animated movie with the best graphics.
FAVREAU NOT CHOSEN AS THE DIRECTOR
Jon Favreau is one of the most prominent directors who has made his name at the top in the kids’ animated movie genre. Jungle Book’s remake that released in 2016 was also directed by Favreau.
Despite getting one of the best Academy Award-winning movies in the modern film industry, Favreau was not chosen as the director for the upcoming release. The sequel of the 2019 film, Lion King II is scheduled to release in 2021 with Barry Jenkins’ direction.
The award-winning 40-year old director Barry Jenkins is well-known for his scriptwriting in the 2016 film ‘Moonlight’. Barry was nominated for multiple awards for the 2 years he worked on the movie. He also won the Academy Award for Best Writing in Oscars 2017.
Barry was considered as the new director and the replacement of Favreau, many viewers didn’t take the news in a good way. In recent years, Favreau has created a big fan circle from playing ‘Happy’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to bringing us the exceptional movies he has been a part of.
FOCUS ON THE ORIGIN OF MUFASA
Lion King II will mainly focus on the origin of Mufasa. It’ll be focusing on the recent times in which Simba rules the kingdom along with some backstories of Mufasa. Simba will be learning on how to become the right king for the jungle with the help of his father’s memories.
The movie’s production was going to start in 2020 but because of the shutdown, all the work done on the movie filming was temporarily suspended. It is not yet known about when the movie will release but Barry Jenkins will officially be directing the remake.
