Amazon Studios also set the end date for The Extension. The famous science-fiction drama has secured an early renewal for Season 6, which will last. The original casting member, Cas Anvar, who endured a slew of accusations of sexual assault over the summer, is not returning for the final season. The rest of the cast, headed by Steven Strait, and Naren Shankar, a long-time Expanse showrunner, will be back.
Renewal of Season 6 will take place three weeks before Prime Video’s Season 5 premiere on December 16 in more than 240 countries and territories. I hear Season 6 is tentatively scheduled to launch production on January 20, with the target start date subject to adjustment amid fluid pandemic conditions.
The Alcon-produced The Expanse, based on James S.A. Corey’s best-selling books, was first picked up by Syfy, where it broadcast for three seasons. Following its cancellation in 2018, the show’s legion of devoted supporters mounted a massive Save Our Show initiative that helped seal the Amazon contract. The fourth season of space drama was launched internationally as the Amazon Original Series in December 2019. We’ve prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and providing a voice to stories that matter. Special thanks go to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, authors of books and series, and Naren Shankar, showrunner and executive producer. It remains an opportunity and a pleasure to collaborate with this squad.
We would also like to thank Amazon for their continued assistance in telling this story in its most refined form and carrying The Expanse to a global audience.
The Expansion is set in the future, where humanity has colonized the solar system. The inhabitants of Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt have long been in opposition. When the Rocinante crew uncovers ancient alien technologies, a massive plot starts to emerge—one that takes the solar system to the verge of conflict. The Extension is a high-level science-fiction adventure that investigates civilization’s limits against the known universe’s far-reaching reaches.
The Hugo Award-winning series has been produced and written by the Oscar-nominated Children of Men duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who make the series alongside Shankar, Kosove, Johnson, Laura Lancaster, Sharon Hall, Sean Daniel, Jason Brown, and Dan Nowak.
The Alcon Television Company generates Expansion. In June, the studio conducted an internal investigation after the series star Anvar faced multiple allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault.
