It’s been a long time since the final season of Game of Thrones ended, but fans of the show are still unable to get over how disappointed they were with the final installment. Of course, with the level of popularity the show and its characters have enjoyed since April 17th, 2011, fans have numerous theories brewing when the first episode ever aired. Some theories make sense, and others don’t.
But many popular fan theories of the show have neither been confirmed by the show or the show’s representatives, and that has left fans heartbroken. Nonetheless, fans have taken it upon themselves to dive deep into the series, multiple dives if necessary, and have come up with some seriously intense fan theories.
The ending of Game of Thrones was left open to interpretation for fans on purpose, which is why the stream of theories coming in could be completely valid. While fans await confirmation or denial of their fan theories by a spin-off show or by George RR Martin himself, we’ve made a list of the craziest and coolest fan theories about the show and its ending that actually make sense.
Drogon may be going back to Valyria to lay more dragon eggs
The sudden and unexplained disappearance of Drogon left many fans feeling confused and maybe even angry. After Jon Snow murders the Khaleesi, Drogon is seen lifting the corpse and carrying her body to the East of King’s Landing. The theory that Drogon’s destination is none other than Valyria is pretty compelling. Valyria is the place of birth of the Targaryens and their dragon pets.
Another interesting thing to note would be that even though Drogon himself is a male dragon, an ancient myth in Westeros states that Dragons can change their sex. Fans thus believe that Drogon may, after all, be able to lay eggs with another reptile, and the dragon clan may not be extinct in Westeros after all.
Jon and Daenerys forever
The build-up to Jon and Daenerys’s ultimate meeting throughout the show had fans hoping that the two would fall in love and rule Westeros together. In season 7, when they finally meet and fall in love, these very fans rejoice and almost expect a Disney-like ending they were never likely to get in the first place.
Jon killing Daenerys in cold blood came as an unexpected end to the series to many fans, and naturally, they opposed the ending. Given that the Targayens weren’t new to incest, the two’s pairing would’ve made a lot of sense.
Arya Stark has one last target on her kill list
Melisandra predicted that Arya would shut a pair of brown, blue, and green eyes forever during the show. Arya almost fulfilled this prophecy as she killed Walder Frey, who had brown eyes, and The Night King, who had blue eyes. After that, viewers assumed that the green eyes she would shut would be Cersei’s, but Cersei died of injury beneath The Red Keep’s rubble.
At the end of the series, the youngest Stark daughter is seen going West of Westeros to the unmapped and beyond the unknown.
That leaves another open thread for the show. Fans expect the new potential HBO spin-off series concerning the travels of Arya and her killing of a green-eyed character soon.
After Jon and Daenerys die, their child acquires the throne
At the end of season 7, when fans started to ship Jon and Daenerys together whole-heartedly, a new theory began to develop. After their romantic rendezvous in the boat, fans began speculating about a baby, popularly referred to as ‘boat baby.’ They suspected that both Jon and Daenerys would die in the final season, and their son would inherit the throne.
Fans would’ve loved the tragedy that could come from the succession of the baby to the throne after their death. Hard luck, fans!
Tyrion Lannister is a Targaryen!
In the series, fans are stunned when they find out that Jon is a Targaryen. However, many fans believed that Tyrion would be revealed to be a Targaryen too. Tywin’s hatred for his son could be a plausible reason behind this theory. Some fans believe that mad King Aerys Targaryen had an affair with Tywin Lannister’s wife, Joanna, Tyrion’s mother, which is why he hated him that much.
In the show, Tywin also says, “You’re no son of mine,” before Tyrion shoots him dead with an arrow.
Fans also believe the growing bond between Daenerys and Tyrion to be something more profound than just friendship and loyalty. Daenerys’s trust in a Lannister is seen as another indicator for the same.
Winning of The Night King
Given the whole series of bombs that the show dropped on its fans one after another, it was not surprising that fans believed that the show might not have a nice ending at all.
The ending where the Night King wins is very bleak but seemed highly likely as the Night Kings and his band of White Walkers were portrayed as unkillable monsters. This series could also have continued to subvert expectations by letting winter consume all of Westeros.
Bran is actually Bran, the Builder!
Everyone who has seen the series knows that Bran the Builder is an ancestor of the Straks who created The Wall more than 8000 years ago. Not just the Stark connection, but our Bran and Bran from the past were believed to be the same person by many fans because of Bran’s ability to influence the past and future.
Fans genuinely believed that Bran might be the one to go into the past and raise the wall as he is aware of the White Walkers’ existence in the present day.
Another thing to note would be that when Old Nan mentioned the old stories, she said the ones about Bran the Builder were our Bran’s favorites.
