Fashion is a form of art and expression. It has always been a reflection of society and recent happenings. It illustrates the forever-changing style of clothes sported by individuals with cultural stature.

A fashion trend emerges when the mass populace is captivated by a particular clothing style and starts to imitate and copy it on a large scale. Fashion trends are inspired by artistic figures like actors, singers, models, and other high-profile celebrities.

The success of a fashion trend rests in the manner in which society elucidates and gauges the trend. The barometer of social acknowledgment assesses the impact that the trend has on the community and people.

Most of the existing fashion trends are pessimistic and derisive, having been reworked from the popular trends in the past decades to accommodate modern tastes. These style crazes that had been prominent in their era are now observing a revival in vogue.

Fashion and the early ages

Fashion played a significant role in shaping history. It is a reflection of the culture of society.

Be it in any age or era, the fashion of that period never fails to make us familiar with the societal conditions and situations in those times.

We learn about women’s status, the living conditions, the peace and prosperity, the life and dressing of their aristocratic nobles in contrast to the garments worn by the general population, amongst other things. Fashion helps us determine these.

Fashion Trends from the 60s

The 1950s bottled up the people’s cries for leeway in fashion and the pressure blew up in the 1960s. This is rightly said because fashion turned bipolar in every sense of the matter.

The style was steered around the youth market and promoted a vast multitude of assorted trends.

It affected the people and society together. The older generation might not even have thought in their wildest dreams that women would wear so short a skirt that a new term- “expose” would have to be coined.

There was a lot of experimentation with the colors and sizes of the apparel. You can blame the trends on the British and the Beatles. They were the fashion influencers.

Fashion in the 70s

This was an eclectic blend of fashion tastes that evolved over a decade after the outrageous style trends gained momentum.

From flares and bell sleeves to shearling coats and miniskirts, and over-the-knee boots, folk-inspired printed dresses, corduroy, and boho blouses, you name it, and they had it all.

Skirts got shorter, the pants got tighter, and the boots got higher! Style icons like Jane Fonda, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Hall, Bianca Jagger, Grae Jonas, and Diane von Furstenberg lived in this grooviest decade and to date continue to inspire millions of people globally. It also taught society that change is always for the greater good.

Fashion in the 80s

Fashion in the 80s was all about creativity, be it taken from the past or fabricated for the future.  Brightly colored accessories, wild hair, makeup that screamed loud and neon were the rage of this decade. The generation was rebellious against anything normal.

Society loved brands, and teens epitomized MTV. Fashion had a significant impact on the entertainment industry. Be it music, television, or films, fashion had a far-reaching impact on almost everything it could get its hands on.

Individuals like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Lizzie Borden, and Princess Diana were the trendsetters in these ten years. You may say that the 1980s was the age of Ronald Regan, MTV, and weird fashion fads and styles that still carry the title of the 80s look to this day.

Fashion in the 90s

Fashion in the nineties was something that could not be pinned down. Minimalism and Grunge were the prime features of the decade.

From scrunchies to acid-washed denim and slip dresses to colorful blazers and velvet, they had it all.

Designer brands like Versace, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger gained wide popularity as they were endorsed by celebrities and supermodels and brought into the fashion-focused media limelight.

Technological advancements like the internet and satellite helped to make fashion accessible to all. Reality shows and popular TV shows like Friends globalized the trends and inspired clothing styles.

Present-day scenario

Fast forward to the present day, where technology dictates how we dress.  It influences almost every aspect of our lives.

In a broken and disunited country, fashion trends are deconstructed. Asymmetry is a symbolism of a lack of unity and divergence of people. When we fondly remember these days ten years down the road, we will reminisce about how our society was reflected in art, music, and fashion.

Impact of Fashion tends on People and Society

1. Fashion boosts creativity and gives impetus to talented designers.

2. Fashion is an aesthetic expression of art within its right.

3. Fashion may sometimes make people spend their savings and take a person in for a bumpy financial crisis.

4. Fashion promotes materialism and may convey a false message to the people.

5. Fashion connects like-minded people. It goes beyond the physical boundaries of all countries and speaks a common language.

6. Fashion trends tend to objectify women. It plays with young minds and shows women as commodities.

7. The fashion industry employs over 58 million people and is creating countless job opportunities every day. You can make a career in fashion and improve your knowledge of this vast industry that is just as deep as the ocean.

After reading this, if you still say fashion is frivolous, you may need to knock on the doors of your doctor to have your head examined. Our society’s culture and expression are written all over in our music, entertainment, and fashion, both figuratively and literally.

Just like every coin has two sides, the fashion industry also has a dark angle to it. We need to look out for the vices of fashion trends and bear in mind that fashion is for human convenience, and we must not let it enslave us!
