Buying clothes suited to your taste appears to be like a cakewalk when you think about how exhausting it can be to find the right products for your skin. The market is flooded with thousands of options, and let’s face it, all of those products look good and effective in the advertisements.

Are they really?

Chances are, they’re not the best fit for your skin. Therefore, you must figure out what suits your skin best before sticking to a particular skincare regime. Yes,it’s true that you can no longer define your face as oily, dry, or acne-prone and expect to filter out the right products.

To help you get kickstarted on the journey of getting to know your skin better, and ultimately, have the smooth and glowing skin you always dreamed of, we’ve made a detailed and quick-to-follow step-by-step list!

Step 1: What’s Your Skin Type?

This one is a no-brainer. The first step that you need to take in the process of building a skincare routine is to figure out what kind of skin you’re working with. You can break down the several skin types into the following:

  1. Dry Skin: You have dry skin if your skin has a rough or flaky texture.
  2. Oily Skin: This  type of skin is characterized by big pores and looks greasy and shiny.
  3. Combination Skin: This type is a combination of both dry and oily skin on different parts of the face.
  4. Sensitive Skin: Sensitive skin may react with makeup products and itch or sting.
  5. Normal Skin: Such skin is balanced and not overly sensitive.

Thin or Thick Skin? Skin Density

Apart from the skin type, your skin’s density may also play an essential role in determining the best products. You can have either thin or thick skin, and it is elementary to find out how. Simply pinch the skin over your cheekbones with your thumb and forefinger. If the skin caught between your fingers is less than 0.5 cm, you have thin skin. If it’s between 0.5 and 1 cm, you have intermediate-level skin. If the skin measures more than 1.5 cm, it’s thick skin.

People with thin skin experience premature lines and wrinkles, whereas those with thick skin may experience laxity and drooping. The intermediate thickness of the skin is ideal.

If you’re not sure what your skin density is but experience the problems that come with the thickness being either too high or low, you might want to try products that are high in retinol. Retinol is excellent in plumping skin and even helps the skin get more firm.

Is your Skin Thirsty or Hydrated?

Ever wondered why some people might be a certain age but look a different age? This may be because their skin is dehydrated. Common causes for such skin would be alcohol intake, sleep deprivation, and excessive sun exposure. If you too have such skin, it’s best to invest in hydrating products for your skincare. It’s also best to stay away from astringents as they only dry your skin further. Also, double up on your water intake!

Step 2: CTM- Cleanse, Tone, and Moisturize is your mantra

Now that you’ve established a skin type, the next thing to do is understand the process of the skincare routine. There are three steps that you may want to keep in mind:

  1. Cleansing Your Face- Cleansing is the cleaning process of the skincare routine.
  2. Tone Your Face- The use of toner helps balance out your face.
  3. Moisturizing Your Face- This last step helps to hydrate your skin and soften it.

These three steps are essential to a successful beauty routine. But remember, as you age, the products you use will change, and so will your skin. So don’t be hard on yourself and appreciate your skin.

Step 3: Wait!

Once you’ve established a realistic skincare routine and have started following it, don’t expect results to show immediately. It takes time for products to start working. Sometimes, you may have to trial-and-error a few products until you find the one that best suits you. That is entirely okay! It’s hard to find the right product the first time. Your health and diet are also vital for skincare, so remember to concentrate on that too.
