Harry Styles is an English singer, songwriter as well as an actor. His singing career began in 2010 when he enrolled as a contestant in the X-Factor.
Harry received his first tattoo when he was 18 years old, and since then, he has gotten numerous tattoos, precisely 52 of them which cover his skin in artistic ways. Almost all of these tattoos have some kind of hidden meaning attached to them, from his butterfly tattoo to tattoos about his mother and sisters and even other family members that he holds dear to him. Some of our favorite tattoos and their meanings are given below.
The naked mermaid
This is a design that he got inked onto his left forearm in November 2014. It of a naked mermaid, and usually, mermaid tattoos represent rebirth and danger. When Harry was on The Today Show as a guest, he was asked about the meaning behind getting the tattoo. He simply replied, “because I am a mermaid.”
The anchor tattoo
The anchor tattoo is another of our favorite ones. It is a naval anchor and is positioned on his left wrist. This tattoo is widespread in the sailor crowd and is a typical design for any boat lover to have.
Funnily enough, this tattoo was done to cover up his older tattoo, which was “I can’t change.”
The eagle tattoo
The eagle symbolizes courage and freedom; hence the tattoo signifies the same. Styles got this tattoo when his singing career was at its highest, and there was no looking back. Thus, the eagle represents the hard work and the accomplishments of his solo career.
This tattoo was also used to cover up another tattoo that said, “Things I can.”
The “A” tattoo
This tattoo is pretty easy to decode. The letter “A” tattooed on Harry’s left arm stands for his mother’s initials, i.e., Anne Twist.
It is a lovely gesture of his to get his mother’s initials inked on his skin as a tribute to her and how she has helped him and stood by him.
The butterfly tattoo
The butterfly tattoo is inked right across the middle of his stomach. Liam Sparkes did this tattoo.
Butterflies generally represent transformation and change, so the butterfly tattoo symbolizes Harry’s transformation and evolution from a young and naive boy to where he is today, a famous star and an actor as well!
‘The Pirate Ship’ Tattoo
The pirate ship tattoo is inked on Harry’s left bicep. When asked about the tattoo in an interview, Harry sweetly said that the ship is mainly a reminder of traveling home and not forgetting his roots while he is on tours, going around the globe. (This reason has us tearing up on the inside.)
‘Gemma written in Hebrew’ Tattoo
Gemma is Harry’s older sister, and the bond that they have is unbreakable. Hence, it would be obvious for him to get a symbol of his love for her inked on his body. He got her name in Hebrew inked on his upper left arm.
The next relative’s initials that Harry got inked on his left forearm is the letter “R.” R stands for his stepfather, Robin Twist, who was also there for Harry and helped Anne raise him and Gemma.
The swallows tattoo
This tattoo is a typical classical sailor tattoo and again represents traveling and being out on the road and always remembering to go home. The swallows are two of his most distinctive tattoos and, as said above, hold significant meaning for him.
In an interview with US Weekly, he said, “I like that kind of style of tattoos, like the old sailor kind of tattoos. They symbolize traveling, and we travel a lot!”
This is the second sailor-type tattoo that he has got, the first being the anchor tattoo. It’s safe to assume that he adores these tattoos.
He seems to speak through these tattoos, and they are obviously the result of a tremendous emotional thought process that he went through before deciding to get them inked permanently on his body.
