The Selection movie; a young adult romance based on one of the most famous book series of Kiera Cass, set 300 years in the dystopian future, will be coming to Netflix soon. Keep reading to find out more!
After Netflix’s success of its recent teenage romance ‘To All the Boys: always and forever’, the streaming platform collaborated with Haifaa-Al Mansour, the first female filmmaker of Saudi Arabia, for the movie.
This movie would turn out to be perfect for book lovers who enjoyed Delirium, Divergent, or The Wrath and the Dawn. The story revolves around 35 girls, who have the opportunity of a lifetime to escape a rigid caste system, live in a palace and win the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon. Among the 35 selected girls is America Singer, hailing from a lower economic class, the storyline goes on to depict the struggles and challenges she faces as she has to choose between love and her old life.
The rights to adapt the book series to film have seen a lot of ups and downs, it passed down from CW who first announced that it would adapt the book as a TV series back in 2012, then reshot the pilot with a new lead early in 2013, and ultimately scrapped the project by mid-2013, to Thea Sharrock in 2016, according to Variety (the director of another book-to-film adaptation, the film Me Before You) attached as a director. After announcing the producers briefly in 2018 there hadn’t been any further news about the film project until this past April finally announcing that Netflix would be releasing the film.
You can find a number of fan-made trailers online, an official trailer is yet to be released!
The latest update notified that the movie would come to Netflix in 2021, the scripting for the movie began in 2020, the process couldn’t move beyond scripting due the coronavirus pandemic, Kiera Cass stated that she is still in the scripting stage, and asked not to expect the movie to follow the book’s exact storyline. The movie is expected to release sometime during mid-2021.
