The much-celebrated American-Palestinian Model Gigi Hadid turned 26 on Friday. Her proud father, Mr. Mohammed (72), took to Instagram to wish and celebrate his daughter and shared a collection of her pictures and a heartfelt note. He stated about 20 things that fans “did not know about” and make him a proud father. In his post, he declared that Gigi is a self-made person who never took a single dollar from her parents and that she has been standing on her own feet since she was as old as her daughter Khai, modeling for Baby Guess being her first professional work.
Mr. Mohammed went on to mention how Gigi was a sports star, a junior Olympic volleyball contender, and an accomplished equestrian junior Olympic contender. She has won “hundreds” of national championships and still rides till today, and we cannot deny that, given that the sisters are often seen to have a soft spot for horse-riding on their Instagram handles.
Talking about her academic achievements, he went on to write that New York University accepted the model for a course in forensic criminal psychology after high school. Also, Mr. Mohammed couldn’t help but point out the fact that his daughter has the highest number of Vogue magazine covers worldwide, which comes to around fifty. And lastly, Gigi is also the UNICEF USA ambassador to Africa, Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
But of course, users were swift to point out and clarify their views on Gigi being “self-made.” One of them commented that Gigi comes from a privileged background, and hence calling her ‘self-made’ would be an exaggeration. The comment box witnessed many such comments saying, “Gigi is definitely not self-made,” “Sure. And Marciano is your close friend so of course, she modelled for Guess as a baby”, “Self-made?? Born privileged, more like it”
Well, this might not be a blow, given that social media is a platform for judgment and everybody has an opinion and are apparently entitled to pass on comments as and when they please (heavy sarcasm) since there are little to no consequences to what one can say from behind the screens anonymously.
