Longtime movie and TV fanatics know this for a fact: Best Kiss has long been the most iconic MTV Movie & TV Awards category. Since the category’s inception at the first show in 1992, the award has become one of the most awaited award show moments each year. It represents the emotions and somewhat sexiness we want our favorite movies and TV series to rouse within us. It’s all about adorable young love, wild passion, and sometimes, a laugh.
Of course, the award has come a long way from 1992 to 2021. One of the most exciting features is that, unlike other awards, the Best Kiss award often comes with an onstage display of affection from the winning couple. This makes for iconic moments fans remember for a long time to come. The rich history of the award was first inaugurated by Anna Chlumsky and an 11-years old Macaulay Culkin for My Girl in 1992.
We’ve put together a list of our favorite Best Kiss Awards and onstage moments. Let’s look back at award-winning smooches from 1992 to 2021.
1. The Twilight Impact
Movies: The Twilight Saga movies, 2009-2012
On the top of the list, we have the saga that had a supernatural impact on steamy best kisses. From 2009 to 2012, the five Twilight films took pop culture by storm. They inspired die-hard fandom and gloomy consequences. Team Edward won by miles, as the chemistry of its two leads, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, reigned supreme. The two took home Best Kiss
trophies for four consecutive years.
2. All Eyes on Rachel and Ryan
Movie: The Notebook, 2005
This is our TOP PICK on the list. The Notebook co-stars, and then-lovers, shared one of the MTV Movie Awards’ hottest and most memorable kisses when they won in 2005. The two decided to recreate the kiss after starting on opposite ends of the stage and meeting in the middle for a sexy makeout, with McAdams’s legs wrapped around Gosling’s waist. As if the movie wasn’t filled with romance, they turned the heat up on screen too. This is and will always be the apex of Best Kiss. No one can ever come close.
3. Cruel Intentions Indeed!
Movie: Cruel Intentions, 2000
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair from the Cruel Intentions became the first same-sex pair to take home the award in 2000. Their red carpet kiss turned out just as steamy as the kiss they share in the film. The award set a precedent for plenty of female and male same-sex pairs (and trios) to be nominated throughout the decade, including Starsky & Hutch and Not Another Teen Movie. Brokeback Mountain made Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger the first men to win together in 2006. Milk’s Sean Penn and James Franco were nominated in 2009. The 2000s “two dudes kissing lol” trope saw wins for American Pie 2 and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
4. Spider-Man Is Upside Down
Movie: Spider-Man, 2002
All millennials remember one of the most iconic and controversial smooches from the early 2000s. Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire kiss in the rain in 2002’s Spider-Man, and Maguire managing to do so upside down is what really hooked fans. There’s nothing Spiderman can’t do.
5. We’re Gasping For Air!
Movie: The Fault in Our Stars, 2015
When The Fault in Our Stars came out, it gave fans worldwide a reason to laugh and many to cry. Their whole romance has gone down in history as one of the best, and we’ll never get tired of watching Gus and Hazel fall in love, despite the devastating consequences of cancer. The kiss the two share when Hazel has just caught a breath and Gus is overwhelmingly in love with her in the attic of Anne Frank’s house is so heartbreaking yet brilliant.
6. Rought, but Pitch Perfect
Movie: Pitch Perfect 2, 2016
We don’t know which one we like better- Wilson and Devine’s actual passionate kiss in Pitch Perfect 2 or the onstage recreation of their iconic kiss at the awards show in 2016. On stage, after joking that they had “no sexual chemistry,” the Workaholics alum fell to the ground in a makeout session that lasted longer than anyone anticipated. “Thank you very much!” DeVine thanked before the two got back to their seats. Now that’s romantic and funny.
