America’s Got Talent has earned its name for its incredible and sometimes bizarre performances. However, occasionally, there is one performance that truly moves and leaves us short on words.
NBC’s America’s Got Talent stood witness to one such performance during its Tuesday episode. Jane Marczewski, a 30-year-old Ohio native who goes by the stage name Nightbirde, held her head high and shared her journey to America’s Got Talent stage.
Jane Marczewski has been going toe to toe with cancer and selected her original song “It’s OK” on Tuesday night to impress the panel of judges.
The Zanesville, Ohio- born chronicles her struggles, suggesting that despite the titular sentiment, her condition isn’t fine, “Last time I checked, I had some cancer in my lungs, my spine, and my liver.” Her odds are not in her favor, and she has only a two percent chance of recovery.
She told the panel, “Two percent is not zero. Two percent is something.”
Startled judge Howie Mandel gasped, “So… you’re not OK?”
Jane replied very calmly like a true warrior, “Well, not in every way, no.”
After stating that she still has “a certain amount of cancer” left in her liver, spine, and lungs, she told panelists Howie Mandel, Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, and Heidi Klum that “it’s important that everyone knows that I’m so much more than the bad things that happen to me.”
She then dominated the AGT stage with her original song and left the audience amazed. She quickly conjured up three Yes and a Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell, guaranteeing her entry into the live performances.
Following the flood of applause, Howie Mandel remarked that authenticity is at the center of his mind when performers like her take the stage. “You know when you feel it when it moves you,” Mandel continued. “That feels like the most authentic thing I have heard this season.”
She interfered with his articulation of the ‘amazing performance’ and said, “You can’t wait until life isn’t tough anymore before you choose to be happy.”
“It was heartfelt, it was powerful, and I believe you’re lovely,” Sofia Vergara remarked, wiping her tears off.
“Your voice is excellent, unique. I agree with Howie’s authenticity remark. There was something about that tune you almost casually told us what you’re going through,” Cowell said, prior to saying that he wasn’t going to give her a ‘Yes” or her performance but instead pushed the Golden Buzzer to send her straight into the live shows.
