The Royals singer released her long-awaited single Solar Power, a flirty song about her love for the summer and the beach.
For the first time in four years, New Zealand singer Lorde has released a new single called Solar Power. The release came just days after she announced the upcoming release of her long-awaited fresh album of the same name.
The 24-years old singer planned to surprise fans worldwide. Solar Power’s release was a surprise launch that was cunningly timed to coincide with the solar eclipse that occurred in the northern hemisphere on Thursday.
Lorde co-wrote and co-produced the sunny pop number with American Singer Jack Antonoff. The simple, peppy acoustic guitar and percussion in the composition of the summery track are sharply different from the sounds of Lorde’s previous works. That, right there, is one reason why fans love Lorde, who is never afraid to experiment with her style of music.
The cover art for the forthcoming album Solar Power was released earlier this week. It featured the Ribs singer leaping over a camera that’s stationed on the ground, without any underwear.
On Tuesday, the photograph’s release took social media by storm as fans rejoiced over the long-awaited news of the singer’s fresh album. Many fans shared their artwork and memes based on the cover art. They later posted that Twitter had reported their posts and their artwork had been taken down due to copyright infringement.
Solar Power is the two-time Grammy award winner’s third album, after 2017’s Melodrama and Pure Heroine, which was released in 2013. The release of Solar Power was originally scheduled for June 2020, but Lorde delayed the release after her pet dog, Pearl, suddenly died in November 2019.
Lorde said losing her pet dog Pearl was an indescribably painful experience. “A light that was turned on for me has gone out. The bright energy I was trying to communicate to you has gone, for now,” she revealed last year.
On Friday, Lorde had told Australian youth radio station Triple J that her upcoming album will have a light, playful and fun vibe. She even described the album’s character as a girl who enjoys going to the beach in an email to fans timed with the song’s release.
“There’s someone I want you to meet. Her feet are bare at all times. She’s sexy, playful, feral and free. She’s a modern girl in a headstock bikini, in touch with her past and future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, and her lovers are many. The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors,” she wrote in the email addressed to her fans.
The release date for the new album Solar Power has not been confirmed yet. However, the singer has hinted that fans can refer to the natural calendar for clues on dates, hinting at similar tracks as the release of the first track coinciding with the solar eclipse. Many unconfirmed reports surfaced on Friday, claiming that the single may have been accidentally released early in some regions after some fans reported that it had appeared on some streaming platforms and then disappeared.
While the music is very divergent from her previous works’, Solar Power confirms a few things we already know and love about Lorde. She is not one to go with the mainstream. She slides into any pop genre she fancies and ends up making it sound absolutely fresh and glorious. Lorde has gained recognition as one of the most recognizable voices in pop and has solidified this marked change from her electronic beginnings in music.
It’s great to have Lorde back, isn’t it? Solar Power is like a warm hug from a friend you haven’t seen for years. Maybe four years, if you’re specific. The track is fresh, familiar, and soft. It’s a cold soda on a hot day at the beach and cold waves on your feet. With Lorde back, the hopes of 2021 being a great year have really, really risen.
