Recently James Gunns has taken to Twitter to explain why he wanted the ‘Dumbest DC Character’ of all time, The Polka- Dot Man to be a part of his 2021 suicide squad.
David Dastmalchian is portraying the role of this Batman villain in the highly anticipated DC movie. David Dastmalchian made its debut via Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight appearing as one of Joker’s hooligans. Dastmalchian went on to later appear in Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners adapting to Bob Taylor in 2013.
Suicide Squad isn’t his first Superhero debut. Dastmalchian has starred in MCU’s “Ant-Man” as Kurt and in the following sequel “Ant-Man and the Wasp” as well. He is also set to carry on his role of Piter De Vries in Dune as well as lending his voice for “What If”.
What did James Gunn say?
“Polka-Dot Man is great, but I did think I needed a character who’s thought of as one of the dumbest ever,” Gunn admits. “So I went and looked online, ‘Who’s the dumbest DC character of all time?’ and it was Polka-Dot Man. We’ve turned that character who’s a sad, pathetic character into a character who’s depressed because people think he’s stupid. He has a very tragic story that you learn about throughout the film – to be able to add depth to characters who are thought of as the silliest is a fun thing for me to do.”
Who really is Polka-Dot Man?
In the pages of DC comics Abner Krill, a.k.a. Polka-Dot Man is a minor villain of Batman’s Rogues Gallery. The supervillain uses technology fused into his outfit. The polka spots on his suits are controlled and trigged through his utility belt. Whenever they’re taken out, the tiny spots grow in size and shape themselves as dangerous and sharp weapons much similar to a buzzsaw or a flying saucer.
To be honest, the Polka-Dot Man really a mainstream supervillain, given that the idea of the character is so senseless and obsolete.
Polka-Dot Man is usually not the kind of villain you want to see in a movie. Though there’s still some chance that he could be a worthy Task Force X member with Gunn and Dastmalchian calling the shots.
