Elisabeth Moss’s adaption of the Booker Prize alum, Margaret Atwood’s Handmaiden Tale is no stranger to protagonist June Osborne’s (portrayed by Elisabeth Moss) futile attempts to escape the dystopian world she’s so deep in. However, in one scene two of her Handmaids met their terrible fate after one grave mistake.
In Season 4, Episode 3: “The Crossing” Osborne made one final attempt to escape Gilead. After getting apprehended by the Guardians, Osborne was hauled to a faculty for interrogation.
Cruel disciplinarian Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd) tortures her to know the whereabouts of her Fellow Handmaids Alma (Nina Kiri), Brianna (Bahia Watson), and Janine Lindo (Madeline Brewer).
June inevitably surrenders to Aunt Lydia’s questions telling her that the trio is hiding back at Esther Keyes’s farm. Following the interrogation, Aunt Lydia escorted Osborne to a chamber where Hannah Bankole ( played by Jordana Blake) was imprisoned in a glass case threatening her survival.
Back at the farm, the fugitive Handmaids were caught and being transported to the colonies alongside Aunt Lydia and June.
As the escort arrived at a railroad crossing, Osborne saw another chance to flee and she seized it.
The van halted at the sign and the guardian stepped out walked to the bushes to pee.
The Handmaids consented to escape and before they ran, Osborne grabbed the opportunity to wreak some revenge on disciplinarian Lydia.
Osborne nabbed Aunt Lydia’s electrocution wand squeezed it down against her throat before choosing not to execute her, offering her a chance to join them.
As the group dashed towards the barricade to cross it before the train, the Guardian saw them and shot down two handmaids.
In the horrifying situation, Janine and June make it across the tracks whereas Brianna and, Alma met their fatal demise after being hit by the train.
This particular scene left the fans criticizing as they believed Brianna and Alma could have survived the escape if it wasn’t for Osborne reasoning with Aunt Lydia.
Another fan concurred: “June really needs to act faster, she took a good few seconds to eventually decide not to beat the sh-t out of Lydia.
“Should have electrocuted her and left the van asap, Alma could’ve been saved with those few seconds.”
The ladies were fleeing from Gilead, a dystopian society where to were made to serve Handmaids following the implementation of state laws throughout America.
The Handmaids were subject to emotional and physical abuse in the households they were put to serve at.
Together Janine and June reached Chicago. however, it was later revealed that after the bombs were dropped, Janine was buried under the wreckage and then brought back to the same hell she desperately fled from.
Whereas June was rescued by Humanitarian volunteers and was sent to Canada to live as a free woman.
